THE DIVE SPOTS  - SYDNEY

The Sydney coastline extends approximately 80kms stretching between Palm beach in the north to Stanwell Park in the Royal National Park to the south.

There are many options for diving around Sydney as it offers many different terrains, species and locations for spear fishing.

You’ll be diving from headlands and inside bays to reefs and deepwater bommies in search of your selected species.

This stretch of coastline which is characterized by sandstone cliffs (up to 70m high) is broken up by Sydney harbour, Botany Bay and further south the Port Hacking River.

Sydney harbour is great for most reef species including bream, luderick, rock blackfish, giant surgeon fish, flathead, jew fish, kingfish, cray fish and many other of NSW common and unusual species.

Most of these species in Sydney harbour are all caught within the first 10 metres of water.

Further south, Botany Bay can hold many great fish including mid sized kings and jew fish along with lots of bream, luderick and trevally along the airport runway.

Spearfishing is prohibited in the Port Hacking River. This where we launch the boat from the majority of the time (1 Wonga rd, Yowie bay marina) and proceed out of Cronulla to head south towards the Royal National Park or North towards Kurnell / Maroubra. This is dependent on where the action is at the present time as well as current weather conditions.

A majority of the diving in Sydney will be done along the many cliff faces and headlands to the reefs and bommies further out from the coastline.

All these areas you will be diving have a vast selection of some of the most common reef and pelagic species including :

•  Red morwong,
•  Blue morwong,
•  Rock blackfish,
•  Luderick,
•  Leather jackets,
•  Bream,
•  Tarwhine,
•  Salmon,
•  Goat fish,
•  Surgeon fish,
•  Red rock cod,
•  King wrasse,
•  Flathead,
•  Jewfish,
•  Snapper,
•  Kingfish,
•  Trevally,
•  Bonito,
•  Dolphin fish and the odd Black Marlin.

Day charters out of Port hacking consist of a mixture of diving from shallow reefs ranging from 5 to 10 metres which is great for beginner / intermediate divers to deeper reefs from 12 to 25 metres deep suited for more experienced divers.

The visibility usually varies from 10 to 20 meters in Sydney.
